Hardwood board repair in Toronto

A damaged patch does not mean a new floor. Ontario Flooring Contractors lifts the affected boards, replaces them with matched stock and blends the repair into the surrounding floor. Repairs are priced per damaged area, so send a photo with the form. If the whole run needs refinishing to blend the colour, that adds $4 to $8 per square foot.

Individual boards replaced, not whole rooms
Species, width, grade and cut matched
Laminate and vinyl plank repair too
Refinishing the run is what makes a patch disappear

Matching boards in a hardwood floor repair is easy, matching colour is not

Finding boards that match on species, width, grade and cut is usually straightforward. What cannot be matched is time. Your existing floor has ambered under its finish and under years of daylight, and a new board of the identical species arrives at the colour yours was on day one. Set side by side, the patch reads as a patch no matter how well it was cut in. The fix is to sand and refinish the whole run afterwards at $4 to $8 per square foot, which takes every board back to bare wood and brings them up together. On a small repair in a low-visibility spot, that extra step is not worth it. In the middle of a living room, it is the difference between a repair and a scar.

Hardwood floor damage we repair

Water and stain damage

Boards darkened by a leak, a planter or a pet. Where the water reached the subfloor, that gets opened up and checked before anything new goes back.

Impact and gouges

Dropped tools, furniture legs and appliance moves. A deep gouge through the finish into the wood is a board swap, not a touch-up.

Cupping and lifted boards

Boards that have taken moisture from below and curled at the edges. The moisture source gets fixed first or the new boards do exactly the same thing.

Our Process

How a hardwood floor repair is done

1

Look at the cause

Water damage from below means finding the source first. Replacing boards over an ongoing leak is money thrown away.

2

Source matching stock

Species, width, grade and cut matched to your existing floor, and the subfloor checked where boards come up.

3

Cut in and fasten

Affected boards removed cleanly, new boards cut in and fastened so they sit level with their neighbours.

4

Blend or refinish

Spot-finished where the location allows, or the whole run sanded and refinished where the repair would otherwise show.

Worth knowing

Water damage repair starts below the boards

By the time a board darkens or cups, the water has been in the subfloor for a while. Replacing the visible boards over a subfloor that is still wet traps moisture under new wood, and the repair cups within months. So the sequence is fixed: find where the water came from and stop it, open up enough of the floor to see how far it travelled, let everything dry to a stable moisture content, and only then cut in new boards. Rushing that is the most expensive way to repair a floor twice.

What we check before quoting a hardwood floor repair

Whether the cause is still active

A leak, a slab pushing moisture or a failed seal under a dishwasher will damage the new boards too.

Whether the boards can be sourced

Older or discontinued profiles sometimes cannot be matched, which changes the approach to the whole repair.

Whether the subfloor underneath is sound

Water that reached the boards usually reached what is under them.

Whether refinishing the run is worth it

In a hallway or a bedroom corner, often not. In the middle of an open living area, nearly always.

Hardwood floor repair questions

Can you repair just a few boards, or does the whole room have to come up?

A few boards. They are cut out and replaced individually. Whole-room work only becomes necessary when the damage is widespread, when the floor has already been sanded to its limit, or when the boards simply cannot be matched.

Can laminate and vinyl plank be repaired?

Yes, within limits. A plank near the edge of a room can be unclicked back to and swapped. A plank in the middle means either unclicking a long way in or cutting it out and gluing a replacement, which is visible close up. Keeping spare planks from your original batch makes all the difference.

My floor has a soft, spongy spot. Is that a board problem?

Usually not. Sponginess is the subfloor or the framing, not the finish floor, so replacing boards over it changes nothing. That gets opened up and looked at before anything else is quoted.

How soon can a water-damaged floor be repaired?

Not until everything underneath has dried to a stable moisture content and the source has been fixed. Going in early traps moisture under new wood and the repair cups within months.
