Laminate flooring is right in a bedroom and wrong in a basement
Laminate is a high-density fibreboard core with a printed decorative layer and a wear coat over it. The wear coat is genuinely tough and takes scratches better than most wood finishes. The core is the weakness: it is wood fibre, and when water reaches it through a joint it swells irreversibly and the plank edges lift. That makes laminate an excellent, economical choice for bedrooms, living rooms and hallways, and the wrong choice for basements, bathrooms and laundry rooms, where a waterproof-core vinyl plank does the same job for a few dollars more per square foot.
